Here I am at Singapore's Changi Airport writing furiously on purchased minutes before I take off for Hong
Kong.
The Singapore Sling, an alcoholic beverage some of you may know, was actually invented in the Long
Bar at the historic Raffles Hotel. The Raffles Hotel has been around for the last 150 years or so and was originally a hostel
run by an Armenian businessman who was also known in Melaka. Today, the Raffles is a white verandahed, dark-wooded place with
definite old world charm, as can be seen by the white turbaned portly car attendant that greets you at the hotel entrance.
Once a hostel, now the prices are sky high and the clientele high class and the location very central.
I did not, however, stay at Raffles. Instead, I stayed down the road at the
Park View Hotel. It may not have been quite as historic or charming, but the price was good. There is an old man that hangs
out downstairs in the restaurant all day in his pyjamas. I'm not sure if he is a guest, if he lives there, or if he owns the
building. He always approaches me at breakfast and speaks to me in a dialect that sounds sort of like Cantonese, only I can't
really make out what he is saying. Sounds a little crazy to me.
Which brings me to Mr. We. But I'll save that for the next time I post anything,
since my time is running out!
I really enjoyed Singapore on the whole. It is a well-laid out, well-maintained,
friendly city. The streets are clean and not crowded and people are really polite. More impressions to come...
